SoMad heads down south to take part in Alcova Miami as part of Miami Art Week, featuring works by David Aliperti.
Join us in celebrating our former artist-in-resident's work! The second international edition of Alcova is set to unfold at Miami’s historic River Inn, the city’s oldest hotel, nestled in the vibrant South River Drive Historic District in East Little Havana, just steps from the Miami River. Riding the wave of its successful debut in Miami, Alcova remains committed to transforming remarkable, historically rich spaces into dynamic platforms for cutting-edge contemporary design.
As always, visitors to Alcova Miami 2024 can expect a carefully curated selection of groundbreaking work by designers from across the world. The event will feature exhibitions from both established and emerging designers, companies, institutions and collectives.
Mother Tree, made in conjunction with SoMad and recently on view in our gallery, is a project that aspires to question the preset values that we hold in the realms of art and design today. Diminutive in scale and high in intricacies, the sculptures are assembled entirely by hand without the aid of any tools or materials other than dyed foam clay. The works can best be described as meditative, intuitive and laborious, each sculpture taking up to months from start to finish.
The intention is to transport the viewer into imagined worlds different from our own, creating landscapes that are emotional and abstract, conjuring relationships between the viewer and the object that are personal and introspective while free from expectations.
Each piece speaks of the indomitable spirit and resilience of nature, of a perennial power for reinvention and reconfiguration – all virtues that are central for the perseverance of minority groups, for marginalized entities and outcasts.
