Jihyun Lee creates work that challenges traditional boundaries, and incorporates constructed props, performance, video, installation, and sound to explore human complexity.
Her controlled environments reveal tensions between agency, identity, and perception. Lee’s practice is driven by her persistent feeling of being “stuck,” shaped by early experiences of pressure to prioritize others’ emotions. This sense of internal fragmentation informed her interest in symmetry, systems, and industrial materials, which she uses to construct artificial yet emotionally charged settings. Recent projects extend this inquiry into social and linguistic systems, blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality. Having developed her practice in Seoul, South Korea, she is now based in the United States while pursuing her graduate studies.
