About the Project

Michaela Harrison, a devoted daughter of Yemanjá and a whale whisperer, has made it her life’s mission to care for and bless the Earth’s waters. In Candomblé, Yemanjá is the powerful Orisha of the sea, motherhood, and protector of fishermen. Michaela honors her ancestral assignment by singing to and with Humpback Whales, creating songs that mend the shattered collective spirit of humanity and support environmental protection, recovery, and balance.

The Documentary

This film will chronicle Michaela’s extraordinary journey of whale whispering from the United States to Brazil, depicting how she deepened her calling to sing with the world and with life itself. Featuring interviews with Michaela’s esteemed elders in Brazil and exploring more Black Feminist Oceanic voices from her community, the documentary aims to show how colonization and enslavement have led to our current environmental crisis. Michaela’s story, interwoven with her connection to the Middle Passage, bridges the past and present, illustrating the establishment of a capitalist society built on the free labor of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Our goal is to address how to navigate and transcend these destructive legacies to build a more sustainable and just future.

Michaela’s whale whispering will be the focal point, connecting multiple storylines of how other water guardians preserve culture and address oceanic climate change.
